About Us

When physicians’ needs are met, patient experience and outcomes improve.

However, as medicine becomes more corporatized, physicians are increasingly losing agency in our practice.

And we won’t allow that.

Frustrated by the profit-driven decisions rooted in board rooms, not exam rooms, doctors —from housestaff to attendings— are joining together in unions to improve working conditions and raise patient care standards.

More than 45,000 doctors are united in the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR/SEIU) and the Doctors Council, the largest and fastest-growing unions of doctors.

Uniting in the nation’s largest union of healthcare workers, SEIU Healthcare, gives us a seat at the table to win historic improvements at our hospitals and clinics and a united voice to advocate for our patients, our practice and our future.

About Doctors Council

First formed in the early 1960s, Doctors Council SEIU unites nearly 5,000 post-residency doctors and attendings at leading medical centers and health systems across New York City, in Chicago and in Minnesota, amongst others.

Our Physician Leaders

Dr. Taylor Walker

Whether a new intern or senior attending, we currently face a healthcare system that puts executives’ profits over patient care and physician well-being. We’re working to change that. By building power in the nation’s largest and fastest-growing union of physicians, we are fighting to build a more just healthcare system for our patients, our profession, and ourselves.

Too often our medical practice is dictated by the bottom line, and not the health of our patients and communities.

The best way to ensure the highest standards for patients, and support the doctors integral to providing their care, is for doctors to join together in a union.
